From Call Centre to Cocktails in Singapore: How becoming Cabin Crew can change your life!
We were delighted to catch up with ex-Cabin Crew Wings student and British Airways crew Linda to find out what she’s been up to lately since becoming Cabin Crew. Read on for a serious dose of inspiration!
Remind me when we met you Linda?
I did the Practical Skills Training day with Cabin Crew Wings and have been working for British Airways for the last 6 years.
How did you find the training day?
It was brilliant, I loved it all. It helped with my confidence, especially going down the slide. The trainers were great.
What were you doing before you got your Wings?
I worked as a team leader in a call centre for 24 years in Leeds.
How different is your life now and what can you tell us?
Very!! I work long haul so tend to fly to destinations like Singapore, Sydney, LA, Capetown. My last flight was to Las Vegas.
Tell me about some of your best memories.
I went on safari in Nairobi and stroked a giraffe and saw orphaned baby elephants. I’ve had cocktails in Raffles in Singapore and visited where they filmed Wild at Heart in Johannesburg.
Does it take a lot to organise the trips you do on lay-overs?
Not really, the crew organise things together and most people are up for it and the hotels we stay in arrange some of the trips.
Do you often work with the same people?
Not often. Occasionally you’ll see a familiar face, but more often you don’t know the other crew members. Everyone is friendly though.
What would you say to someone hoping to become crew?
Wanting to fly the world isn’t enough, you need to have a real passion for customer service and making a difference for passengers.
What’s the best part of the job?
Its often the passengers. We get occasional difficult ones but mostly people are lovely. I helped a lady who was in Business Class recently, she was really nervous about some turbulence. I explained to her that turbulence is annoying (you can’t serve hot drinks, plus it woke me up when I was in the bunk on a break!) but its not a risk to the flight. We were laughing by the end of the chat.
I’ve recently been trained to work in First Class which I really enjoy. You need to make sure you are meeting high standards because passengers are paying a lot of money to be there. The training for the role was excellent.
Have you seen many celebrities?
Quite a few- I spoke to Jamie Lee Curtis that I’d recently been watching a film with her dad in, and I helped Kate Moss in the galley once. Both were lovely. You tend to see more celebrities on the LA flights.
What does the next month look like?
I’m flying to Toronto next week- I have a cousin there so I’ll spend my layover catching up with him.
Thanks for the catch up Linda, and providing some inspo for our cabin crew hopefuls!
