How to become Cabin Crew

Many people believe that to start a job as a Cabin Crew member, you must first complete training courses or apprenticeships before joining an airline. While this is a viable option, it is not the only way to do it. Many airlines are now hiring applicants with no prior Cabin Crew experience, which has benefits for both candidates and airlines. Airlines can train potential candidates to their own standards and culture, and it affords an incredible opportunity to candidates looking for their 1^st break into the Cabin Crew industry.

In order to apply for a position as Cabin Crew you must meet the minimum conditions for each airline. Many airlines have requirements similar to those below, although you must always check with the individual airlines when you apply:

Age: The minimum age is 18 years old for most European airlines, although many Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Oman Air and Al Maha Airways have a minimum age requirement of 21 years old.

Height: Airlines have height requirements because they need to be able to predict your reach as well as avoid injury. These height requirements vary between airlines. As a general guide, most look for people between 5ft 2in (157cm) and 6ft 2in (188cm). However, some airlines will check your reach; can you reach 2.10-2.12m vertically without shoes on?

Ability to swim: Being able to swim is compulsory for this profession for health and safety reasons, so typically you must be able to swim up to 25 meters unaided. You will have to take part in pool drills as part of your initial training.

Education requirements: 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, for a level 2 course.

Tattoos to be hidden: Generally, companies accept tattoos as long as they are not visible when wearing the uniform. This will usually include having no visible tattoos on your face, neck or lower arms.

Good English language skills: Many airlines require flight attendants to be fluent in English, both written and spoken. To pass the interview, you must have an excellent command of the English language. Your ability to communicate in English is a crucial element of your training.

Good health: As future Cabin Crew, you will be the subject of a series of tests and medical examinations. Their purpose is to detect any possible disease or illness that could aggravate during flights.

Good level of fitness: you need to be medically and physically fit to meet regulatory and role requirements. When working the Cabin Crew job, you must be able to lift certain weights above your head to mimic putting luggage into the overhead compartment, and you must be able to pull heavy objects which mimic pulling a fully loaded trolley.

Pass enhanced background checks: You must be able to pass an employment history check including any gaps over 28 days in the preceding 5 years, a criminal record check and proof of identity & right to work checks.

Top Tips:

Complete a Cabin Crew medical before commencing the hiring process with an airline. This will give you the confidence to know your offer will not be affected later down the line for a previously unknown medical issue.

Only apply for roles that you are confident you meet the requirements for and are satisfied with all the terms and conditions of the role including location. Should you withdraw your application later down the line, this may negatively impact future applications for the same airline or agency.

Most airlines require full vaccination against COVID-19. Please ensure you are aware of the airline’s requirements before applying as the alternative may require PCR test as frequently as weekly.
