Are You Damaging Your Cabin Crew Career? Social Media – Here’s What NOT To Do!

Cabin Crew Online Do's and Don'ts

June 30th is Social Media Day – but what does that mean for Cabin Crew? We’re taking a look at some of the top mistakes Cabin Crew make on social media. And what can you do to make sure your online presence is perfectly polished?

Social Media Mistakes – And How to Avoid Them

Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok have millions of users, and while these platforms are a useful tool to connect with friends and family, or build a professional network, you should tread carefully and consider how you present yourself.

Airlines routinely screen Cabin Crew candidates’ background history – and this includes a thorough going-over of your online presence on social media. Often, this will be done by external companies – which means that however well you’ve done during your application process, anything negative on social media that flags up could jeopardise your future career.

Below are some of the biggest mistakes Cabin Crew can make when using social media:

  • Uploading inappropriate images or videos
  • Using vulgar or discriminatory language
  • Badmouthing certain airlines/colleagues/others in the aviation industry
  • Demonstrating poor communication skills

Even if you’re already Cabin Crew, consider taking the time to clean up your social media channels – and check your privacy settings! Any photos showing you in a bad light should be removed. This includes those drunken pics from years ago that were funny at the time, but now would seem unprofessional and inappropriate.

Watch your language – remember that the things you write on social media don’t disappear. Think carefully about what you say. It may be worthwhile going back through old posts to check you haven’t said anything rude or discriminatory. It may be a misguided comment from years ago that doesn’t reflect your character now, but if it makes you look bad, delete it. Otherwise it could cost you your career.

Steer clear of naming and shaming specific people or airlines and avoid posting negative things. It’s fine to let off steam every now and again as long as you’re aware of who and what you want to represent – and remember who might be watching!

Lastly, try to avoid careless typos. Nobody expects your social media to read like a book – but attention to detail is always a good quality to have!

Is a Social Media Blackout the Best Option?

You might think it would be easier and simpler just to hide your social media profiles completely – but this could be seen as a red flag. Airlines want sociable, friendly Cabin Crew – a social media blackout might suggest a lack of social skills or ability to get on with others!

Facebook allows you to customise your privacy settings, so you can be picky about who can see what. Switch on your ‘Timeline Review’ and ‘Tag Review’ options, and this will give you more control over what appears (or doesn’t) on your profile.

Boost Your Social Media Profile

Social media isn’t all bad. Instagram in particular is a hub of Cabin Crew activity, with many glamorous Cabin Crew sharing photos and insights into their working life. While it’s tempting to strike a few poses, it’s always a good idea to check with your airline before posting selfies in your uniform. Make sure you know what is and isn’t allowed.

If you’re savvy about your social media, it can be a great way of networking with other Cabin Crew and for staying in the loop. Some Cabin Crew have accrued thousands of Instagram followers. Some others have turned to blogging to share the highs and lows of Cabin Crew life. Social media can be fun and informative – as long as you know how to make it work for you.
